Ok in this writing were going to learn to make a carbon filter for multiple purposes.
These filters can be used to take the nasty smell of fermenting beer and protect the beer from contaminates, placed on air out put of any thing you can fit it to to reduce smells of exhausts to a level the human nose can not sense. These things are great if you don't like the smell coming through the central AC in your dorm.
The best part is all of the peaces can be obtained for around $3
Gathering Supplies
1. 1 4 pack Scotch Brite cloth towels from Meijers............$2
2. 1 Bottle Activated Carbon from Meijers or fish store......$6
3. 1 sewing needle & thread from Meijers........................$2
Total cost for 4 carbon filters...................................$10.
Scotch Brite Cloth
These things are great for this, they hold all the carbon in good, there terribly strong, and don't restrict much airflow.
- Take the Scotch Brite & fold it in half or to a smaller size to fit your needs.
Sewing
- Then we start to make a kind of pillow by sewing all sides into a square, except one (too stuff the carbon)
This is the carbon
If help is needed on the sewing refer to http://www.instructables.com/id/Kid-Craft-Quick-n-Eazy-Throw-Pillows/
- Except I sew with my hands, sewing needle from $1 sewing kit and any thread. then just sew it in what ever shape I need or prefer.
- I fill the bag (the sewin scotch cloth) about half way, I usually do a little less than half full depending on how tight or loose I want the filter bag.
Securement and Attachment
There are many ways to attach these to what you need to, on a pinch, you can duct tape these and they will work great! but if you have the time and supplies I use hose clamps to attach these to my fermenting output and flow hood output (laminar flow hoods start to make the room nasty smelling when they get old) this makes for a much more secure connection.
Thats it, you're done! set-up, leave, enjoy fresh air.
I have been buying filters exactly like this on the web for around $60.
Not wanting to expend such funds over fresh air, these were created.
