How to Find gold in northern ohio

In order to learn how to find gold you most learn how it got to Ohio. During the last ice age huge glaciers covered most of Ohio. The glaciers were formed up in the artic circle and draged across Canada, which has natural accuring gold deposits, the gold and other rocks where lodge into the glacier and went with it over Ohio. at the end of the ice age as everything started warming up the glaciers melted depositing the gold and other rocks across Ohio.

Tips

  • most of the bigger deposits of gold are in southern Ohio.

What do before you go panning

What you need to do before you go panning streams is dig, either on your property or by the water source, i prefer my yard.what to look for when you dig is:

  • Sandy clay this is usually the top of the glacial deposit.
  • you'll want to measure how far down it is to the top of glacial deposit from the surface.
  • you'll want to keep digging until the sand starts getting the size of gravel
  • look and see if you have any boulders buried this deep, you can use a probe instead of digging lots of holes, if you do break of a piece and see if it is lime stone or a type of rock that does not form in Ohio if it is the later and there are lots of them then you may have a large gold deposit.

Warnings

  • because glacial deposits are very sandy at a certain deep the hole while start to fill with water, normally that is where the gold is.

Tips

the deeper you dig the less clay there will be

Tips

the reason you want to dig deep is because gold is denser than the other rock so when it was deposited it went deeper

where to go panning

After you find the depth where the most gold is go to a creek, river, or a stream. Measure down from the top of the bank to the bottom of the bank if it is a river or to the creek/steam bed. if this is less than the measurement from when you dug the test hole go back to the test hole and get dirt from the hole and pan that either at the stream or in a container of what big enough to pan in.

Warnings

  • do not wade out into a river unless you already know that it is not to deep because if the underwater current is to strong you can be swept away.

Getting the GOLD

There are many techniques to sepperate the gold from the sand and gravel. the techniques are sluicing, which involves using a sluice box, dredging, which is using a dredge wich is basically a vacume that sucks up the gravel and gold but spits out most of the gravel, sniping, and the oldest of them all panning. All the methods eventually require panning.

Tips

  • when dredging you'll get a lot of lead sinkers and bullets do not throw those away the bullets can be with a few dollars apiece and the lead can be melted down and sold.
