How to Use magnetic balls with the Tesla CD turbine

Vintage audio cassette tape in plastic casing.

The Tesla CD Turbine (the little turbine made from recycled CD's and magnets) is used as a magnetic test bed for this SinkScience experiment. Here, six 3/16 inch diameter neodymium ball magnets are placed in a plastic bowl above the CD Turbine.

The Magnetic Disc Pack inside the turbine attracts the balls and creates some interesting spinning patterns as the CD Turbine is revved up using water pressure from the tap. Finally the pattern collapses and the balls unite at the end...well, 5 out of 6 do anyway. One surprisingly goes over the edge...safety glasses everyone!

Apple's iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 updates are packed with new features, and you can try them before almost everyone else. First, check Gadget Hacks' list of supported iPhone and iPad models, then follow the step-by-step guide to install the iOS/iPadOS 26 beta — no paid developer account required.
